Amenorrhea: Lack Of Periods
Missing periods is, of course, perfectly natural if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you are approaching forty it could be the start of an early menopause, particularly if
your menarche was late. There are two types of amenorrhea.
1. Primary amenorrhoea when periods have never started.
2. Secondary amenorrhoea when periods cease.
Causes Of Primary Amenorrhoea
low weight
late menarche (onset of periods) after the age of 16
illness, stress, emotional upset
hereditary disposition
poor diet
hormone imbalance
low vital energy
rare congenital abnormalities
low levels of thyroid hormone
an imperforate hymen
Cause Of Secondary Amenorrhoea
anemia, nutritional deficiencies
low weight, especially from over-dieting
excessively high or low levels of thyroid hormones
other hormone imbalance
obesity - upsetting the body’s estrogen balance
ceasing to take the pill
diabetes, liver disease or chronic illness
stress, overwork, fatigue
drugs such as morphine and those taken for high blood pressure and cancer
poor circulation
radiotherapy
physical disruption, such as travel
shock or emotional upset
rarely, a tumour of the pituitary or adrenal glands, or the ovary
Note: It is important to consult your practitioner for a clear diagnosis if your periods stop.
