Painful Periods (Dysmenorrhoea)

Herbal Treatment For The Painful Periods

  • There are several herbs which help to relax tension in the uterus and cervix. You can choose from: Pulsatilla, Wild Yam, Blue Cohosh, Cramp Bark, Black Haw, Partridge Berry, and Motherwort.
  • For intense pain try Black Cohosh.
  • herbs that increase the circulation to and from the uterus which will relax spasm and clear congestion. Choose from: Cayenne, Ginger, Dang Gui, or Rosemary.
  • For secondary dysmenorrhoea where there is congestion and stagnation of blood, use herbs such as: False Unicorn Root, Lady’s Mantle, Calendula, Dang Gui, and Raspberry Leaves.
  • Where there is general tension and stress add relaxing herbs such as: Skullcap, Lemon Balm, Chamomile, Lavender, or Valerian. Add hormone balancing herbs such as: Shatavari, Chaste Tree or false Unicorn Root.
  • Liver remedies will help to detoxify the symptom, particularly useful in secondary congestive dysmenorrhoea, and also help correct the hormone balance. Choose from: Burdock, Yellow Dock, Dandelion Root, Rosemary, Calendula, or Golden Seal.
  • Any prescription you prepare can be taken throughout the mouth, three times daily. As your period approaches, before the pain starts, take hot teas made from Ginger or Cinnamon to stimulate the circulation, and add spices to your cooking. Infusions made of any of the above herbs can be added regularly to the bath, or to either cold or warm baths.
  • Massage of the back and lower abdomen using dilute essential oils can help relive tension and pain. Use essential oils of either Lavender, Geranium, Clary Sage, Ylang Ylang, Chamomile, Lemon Balm, Ginger or Rosemary.
