a. Cut out or drastically reduce consumption of sugar, salt, coffee, tea and chocolate to help balance to your blood sugar, water balance and hormone balance. Do not smoke. Make sure your diet is excellent, with plenty of (preferably organic ) fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, beans and pulse, and unrefined, cold pressed vegetable or seed oils.
b. Tackle any constipation by changing your diet, eating plenty of fiber in whole grains, fruit and vegetables. Avoid fatty meats, processed fats and deep fried foods. Avoid additives, preservatives and other food pollutants as far as possible.
c. Treat systemic problems such as candida. If you suspect you have food allergies, it is advisable to seek help from a qualified practitioner. Avoid taking steroids and the pill.
d. Take plenty of exercise and fresh air. Make sure you put time aside to rest and relax. If you need help with this try relaxation exercises, meditation, regular massage or aromatherapy, T’ai chi or yoga. If there are specific emotional problems that are causing you stress, it may help to visit a counselor or psychotherapist.
e. Talk to your family or those you are living with about your PMS and explain why you can be irritable, depressed or “difficult” at certain times. Ask them for patience and understanding; assure them that it is your hormones that are causing you to behave differently, not them. Be careful not to miss meals, particularly in the two weeks before a period as this will increase the tendency to low blood sugar. If you do suffer from symptoms associated with low blood sugar, such as sugar cravings, increased appetite, faintness, irritability or headache before a meal, eat some unrefined carbohydrate about every two hours.
f. Take a supplements for a few cycles to correct any nutritional deficiencies. Take 50 mg of vitamin B6 once or twice daily in the second half of the cycle, but stop if you pregnant. Take 500 mg of evening primrose oil once or twice daily and both 100-300 mg of vitamin E and 200 mg of magnesium daily. A multimineral and vitamin pill will supply added essentials such as chromium and zinc.
