Premenstrual Syndrome
Herbal Treatment Of PMS
Use hormones balancing herbs to help restore normal levels of both estrogen and progesterone.
Chaste tree acts directly on the pituitary gland to balance sex hormone production.
By reducing follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and increasing the production of luteal
stimulating hormone. (LSH), the relative excess of estrogen to progesterone can be remedied.
Chaste tree may also help where there is thyroid hormone imbalance.
False unicorn root also has a balancing effect upon estrogen and progesterone and acts as a tonic to the ovaries.
Wild yam and Black Haw are also hormone balancing.
Several herbs have estrogen-like properties, so if blood tests show low estrogen levels,
these could be helpful. Try Sage, Motherwort, Hops and Black Cohosh, all of which are
estrogenic.
Other herbs can be added to your prescription depending on your particular symptoms.
For tension, anxiety, or depression use:
Skullcap Vervain
Wild oats Chamomile
Wood betony
To lift the spirits use:
Rosemary St. John’s Wort
Cinnamon Ginger
Oats Lemon balm
For extreme tension use:
Valerian Passionflower
For fluid retention, bloating, or breast tenderness use:
Corn Silk Dandelion Leaf
Burdock
Breast swelling and tenderness is relieved by:
Cleavers Calendula
Poke Root
All prescriptions for PMS should include remedies to stimulate the liver into functioning
efficiently, and to help it in its work of detoxification. They should include herbs which
will also help to balance blood sugar levels. Use either Burdock, Dandelion Root, Wormwood,
Yellow Dock, Rosemary or Calendula.
If you suffer from constipation or digestive problems, use Yellow Dock, Burdock Root or
Licorice to regulate the bowels. For nausea or vomiting, or both, take Chamomile, Lemon Balm,
Cinnamon, Ginger and Peppermint. Licorice is a useful remedy for minimizing the effects of
stress on the body by affecting the adrenal hormones. Essential oils of Lavender, Rosemary,
Melissa, Rose and Bergamot can be used for massage or for adding to a relaxing bath.
Bach Flower Remedies can be very helpful for negative attitudes towards menstruation that
could be contributing to PMS.
Allow yourself the space and time needed to relax, be quit and introspective, or to be
creative. Learn to listen to the messages that femininity manifests in all of us - they may
show us that what is creating much of the inner tension is really a suppression of our innate
selves.
Menstruation and the days leading up to it can be an especially creative and very
positive time, if we will allow it.
